Columbus Police Chief resigns two months after being hired
COLUMBUS, Neb.- Less than two months after starting as the Chief of Police in Columbus, the city is announcing the immediate resignation of Al Fear.
Columbus Mayor Jim Bulkley said, “This was not the right fit for either party and we're disappointed," in a statement released by the city, saying Fear's last day with the department was Monday.
In an interview in May, NCN asked Fear why his last two jobs as chief only lasted a combined 18 months and why the Columbus job was going to be different. Fear said, "My kids are still in Iowa and we wanted to find a department within a four hour driving distance."
Sgt. Bret Strecker will take over the role of chief on an interim basis for the second time this year, as the city and PD start looking for the next leader.
City officials say Strecker will be in this post for the forseeable future. There was no statement from Fear in the release.
