COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Two schools in Columbus were put on lockout early Tuesday after reports of a person carrying a gun in the area.

Shortly before 8:00 a.m., officers from the Columbus Police Department were called to the area near Columbus High School and Lost Creek Elementary. A caller reported a male subject walking in the area carrying a gun.

The Columbus Public Schools District was notified of the potential threat. Columbus High School and Lost Creek Elementary were both put on lockout and hold-in-place.

Both uniformed and plain clothes officers from the Columbus Police Department remained on scene and identified a person of interest. Officers are continuing their investigation into the situation.

Officers have recovered a BB gun, and at this time the Columbus Police Department believes that there is no continued threat. The BB gun was not recovered on school property.

Police said the person of interest was a juvenile, and was cited for possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct in this incident.
