Kleinig's 71 Lifts Chadron State to Eighth

CHADRON, Neb. – Sophomore Klara Kleinig shot 1-under 71, one of just seven in a 66-golfer field to go under par on the day and vaulted nearly 25 places up the leaderboard to secure a 16th-place finish, leading CSC at the Swan Memorial Tournament in Broomfield, Colorado.
During Kleinig's round, the German recorded three birdies (on holes 1, 9 and 16) and 14 pars. Her only blemish of the day was a double-bogey on No. 10, which was Kleinig's last hole of her round due to an 8 a.m. shotgun start for the field that had Kleinig beginning on No. 11.
Kleinig's improved performance helped the Eagles rise a spot in the team standings, finishing eighth out of 11 competing programs after sitting in ninth after one day of play. The Eagles bested both South Dakota rivals as they were six strokes ahead of South Dakota Mines and 15 strokes ahead of Black Hills State. The Eagles were only six strokes behind sixth-place MSU Denver and two strokes back of seventh-place Fort Lewis.
Sophomore Allison Sanger had CSC's second-best round of the day after Kleinig, carding a 6-over 78 with a pair of birdies, improving from an 80 on Monday. Sanger finished in a tie for 37th place and shot CSC's second-best (or tied for second-best) round on both days of the event. Freshman Macy Kleve was CSC's second-best finisher overall, following up her team-best 77 from round one with an 8-over 80 on Tuesday.
The rest of CSC's scoring five was fellow freshman Lauren Knapp, who shot a 79 today and finished T-41st at 15-over, and senior Payton Wise, who carded an 83 and finished at 22-over in T-53rd place.
CSU Pueblo earned the team title by seven strokes over Colorado Christian, with Cal State LA, Colorado Mesa and Angelo State rounding out the top five. Angelo State's Mia Clarke earned medalist honors by shooting even-par over two days.
Women's golf will be back in action next weekend, competing in the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational hosted by South Dakota Mines in Sheridan, Wyoming next Monday and Tuesday, September 15-16.
