WAYNE, Neb.- A Wayne County Commissioner is planning to make things right after getting caught misusing county Menards rebates.

A letter from the State Auditor Mike Foley to Chairperson of the Wayne County Commissioners James Rabe says Dean Burbach used rebates from Menards earned through county funds for personal items.

Between June 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, 8 of 14 transactions made on the county’s Menards charge account were signed off by Burbach or his son. All 14 transactions earned a 11% rebate, documents say.

Documents say that Burbach spent $591.31 using 3 separate rebates meant to go to the county. $244.60 was spent on personal items such as blankets, kitchen supplies, soda, and children’s toys.

“It’s my fault, I shouldn't have done it,” Burbach told News Channel Nebraska.

Burbach told NCN that he plans to repay the county the money he spent, hoping to get things cleared up.

The Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts has recommended the County implements a procedure, or policy, to ensure the rebates are tracked properly in the future.
