BUTLER COUNTY, Neb. -- A woman from South Dakota was sentenced to prison for charges out of Butler County.

U.S. Attorney Steven Russell said 21-year-old Kylah Whiting, of South Dakota, was sentenced on April 28. She was charged for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and carrying a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime. Whiting will serve 10 years in prison with a serve five-year term of supervised release after. There is no parole in the federal system. Whiting pleaded guilty to both offenses on January 25, 2023.

According to court documents, a Butler County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a vehicle that Whiting was driving on Oct. 12, 2021. Whiting did not stop and a highspeed chase began for the next 14 miles. Whiting lost control of the vehicle and wrecked, flipping the vehicle upside down.

Officials said two other people were seen trying to climb out of the vehicle. Whiting told police there was a gun in the car and a deputy saw a Smith & Wesson handgun near the driver’s door. Whiting told police the handgun, as well as a backpack inside the vehicle, were hers. Whiting and a passenger were taken to the hospital.

Authorities said they searched the car and found two more firearms, a purse, numerous small baggies, four more baggies with 293 grams of meth, and a digital scale, all inside the backpack. Police also found more evidence in and around the vehicle that pointed to possible drug distribution.

This case was investigated by the Butler County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol.
