COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Columbus Fire Department responded to a structure fire Thursday night. 

Authorities said that around 8:20 p.m., they were alerted to a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of 12th Street. 

Columbus Fire said that while they were en route, crews were notified that there were victims reportedly trapped inside. 

Officials said that when they arrived, crews found smoke coming from a two-story residence, and received confirmation that there were two occupants trapped inside the residence. 

Columbus Fire said that crews began an aggressive rescue tactic to rescue the victims from the second-story window. Before crews were able to gain entry, one of the occupants was able to rescue themselves. 

Authorities said that crews were able to gain entry and remove the second victim, and the fire was quickly extinguished shortly after removing the second occupant. 

According to Columbus Fire, both victims were taken to a local hospital and their condition is unknown at this time. 

The home did suffer significant fire and water damage. 

American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family that was affected. 

Columbus Fire said that because of the quick actions of the first arriving crews, the fire was contained to the second story of the residence. 

The fire is under investigation by the Nebraska State Marshal's Office.
