BOYD COUNTY, Neb.— The Boyd County Sheriff’s Office is now empty as the sheriff, all three deputies and the secretary have resigned.

Sheriff Clarence “Chuck” Wrede resigned on Tuesday after 11 years with the county, a day later the group followed.

According to Wrede, the three part-time deputies were his friends working for him because he needed help.

Wrede says they resigned because of low pay and the lack of insurance benifits. According to Wrede, the county gave the deputies $400 a month intended to be used for insurance, though  he says that was barely anything after taxes.

Former Chief Deputy Cheyenne Doyle, who resigned in December, says she loved working for the people of Boyd County, but not for the people running the county board.

Wrede said he was aware of the team’s decision to leave before he resigned.

Boyd County is in north central Nebraska along the South Dakota border with a population of less than 2,000 people.

“Troopers will be adding extra patrols in the area and will be answering calls for service as Boyd County officials work through the situation,” a Nebraska State Patrol spokesman said.

NCN reached out to Board of Supervisors Chairman Alan Nicolas and he declined to comment.
