GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - In partnership with the Nebraska Civil Support Team and other response teams in the region, the Grand Island Fire Department completed specialized hazardous materials training.

This training focused on advanced response for incidents involving hazmat. The training was conducted by the Nebraska CST, a unit trained to assist agencies at local and state level during chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents.

Every two years the GIFD conducts hazmat trainings to ensure firefighters are ready to respond in these incidents.

“Hazardous materials incidents require a high level of technical skill and teamwork,” Fire Chief Cory Schmidt said. “Training alongside the Civil Support Team and neighboring agencies helps ensure our firefighters are ready to respond quickly and safely while protecting our community and the environment.”

Hazmat incidents can go from transportation accidents and industrial spills to unknown substances in public spaces. The GIFD wants to minimize risks when first responders encounter these situations.
