Recall petition announced for Morrill County assessor

MORRILL COUNTY -- Voters are being asked to support the removal of Morrill County Assessor Rose Nelson.
Jessica McKay of Bridgeport said a property line issue has escalated into a recall effort.
"Rose is our neighbor. She lives across the road and we have two adjoining properties. So what happened was, a few years back ,we were just standing in the driveway, just having a chat and I told her like, because we were friends at this time, and I told her, 'Rose, aren't you excited to get a bunch of those overgrown trees get knocked down over there, and she goes 'well, what do you mean?' and I said, 'well, Bryan and I are getting ready to build cattle pens over there," McKay said.
McKay said within a week, Nelson and two other people were over there building a fence. Since then, surveys have been conducted on both properties.
"During the litigation, we had three separate surveys. We had the Bill Keefover survey. Bill Keefover built my house. He's known for over-documenting, actually. His survey matched our warranty deed," McKay said.
She said Nelson also had a survey done.
"Rose had Carl Gilbert of Wildcat (Surveying) come in and do a survey of her own. And it matched up with ours. It did document that that new fence was there. But, in his pictures, he took pictures of each of the fence posts to show that it was a newly-dug post," she said.
McKay said she and her husband had an additional survey done for their lawsuit by Don Brush of Panhandle Land Survey. She said it also lined up with previous surveys. She said she went to Nelson's office and asked why she built a fence on their property. She said Nelson told her it was her property.
The property in question is about a half-acre.
McKay said it became clear the fence wasn't coming down unless they did something about it, which lead to them filing a lawsuit against Nelson.
"My stance on it would be, right is right, and elected officials need to be held to a higher standard,"
