Explosion rocks south Fremont, destroys Horizon BioFuels facility

FREMONT, Neb. — Emergency crews are on the scene of an enormous explosion in south Fremont.
Photos and video from the scene show extreme damage to the former Golden Sun Feeds facility. The explosion knocked down the top section of the tallest part of the structure, which stood hundreds of feet high. Photos showed flames at the facility and black smoke billowing from the scene.
The plant is currently owned by Horizon BioFuels. The company’s social media page says it produces bedding, heating pellets and smoking pellets. The Nebraska Manufacturing Extension Partnership website lists Horizon with 10 employees.
A social media post from a state trooper says several police and fire agencies are on scene. He says a large radius around the emergency site is shut down. People are discouraged from going to the scene.
Details on the cause of the blast and any possible injuries aren’t immediately available.
