More severe weather to hit Nebraska

Severe weather is likely to hit communities across Nebraska on Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service said that the storms might develop a line across Nebraska after 5 pm, hitting the O’Neill area around 6-8 p.m., Norfolk and Broken Bow area about 8-10 p.m., Columbus and Grand Island area around 10-12 p.m., and Omaha area later this evening after midnight.

Around quarter to golf ball sized hail is possible across the state with wind gust as high as 70 miles per hour.

Heavy rain is expected throughout the affected region and localized flooding is possible, especially in northeast Nebraska.

There is a 2-4% chance of a tornado with a chance of a brief or isolated tornado is possible.

Damaging wind chances are 5-44% with the highest risk in the Grand Island, Ord, Brewster, and O’Neill area.

A 5-29% chance of over quarter sized hail with a higher risk in the north central region of the state.

“There is a 50-80% chance of storms and a 15-40% chance of severe storms, highest in northeast Nebraska,” The NWS said in a briefing around 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, “Questions remain on how far southeast the severe storms will make it.”

The NWS said the storms are expected to move relatively quickly, and with the soil already being saturated, flooding chances are higher.

More storms are expected to follow this week and into the weekend.
