City of Columbus Police Chief Charles Sherer announces retirement
COLUMBUS, Neb. – City of Columbus Police Chief Charles Sherer has announced his retirement after 27 years with the Columbus Police Department, effective Mar. 3, 2025.
His retirement marks the conclusion of an impressive 46-year career in law enforcement. Sherer joined the Columbus Police Department as a captain in 1997 and was promoted to chief in 2017.
“Chief Sherer has dedicated decades to serving Columbus, and we are grateful for his leadership and commitment,” said Jim Bulkley, Columbus Mayor. “Beyond leading an outstanding team of officers, he connected with the community in countless ways, from grilling hot dogs at events to addressing citizens’ concerns. We wish him all the best in this next chapter.”
Sherer reflected on his career, sharing his appreciation for those he worked with and served throughout Columbus.
“It has been an honor to serve and protect this community, work alongside remarkable colleagues, and be part of the Columbus Police Department family. With the support of the Mayor, City Council and City Administration, the department has made significant advancements and is well-prepared for this leadership transition,” Sherer said. “I wish everyone the best moving forward.”
Mayor Bulkley emphasized the department’s stability and commitment to public safety during the transition.
“The Columbus Police Department is staffed by dedicated professionals who remain focused on protecting and serving our community,” he said.
Sherer will step back from daily responsibilities once an Interim Chief is appointed but will remain available to provide guidance as needed. Updates regarding the selection of an Interim Chief and the search for a permanent successor will be shared as they become available.
