TECUMSEH, NE — The Johnson County Central Thunderbirds and Southern Raiders split a doubleheader in a pair of contests decided in the final seconds.

Southern took the girls contest 37-35 while Johnson County Central won the boys tilt 47-44.

In the girls contest, Johnson County Central led 10-8 after one quarter behind two three-pointers by Bailee Sterup. The Thunderbirds started the second quarter on a 6-0 to get an eight-point advantage at 16-8. It'd be Johnson County Central's largest lead of the night.

Southern slowly eliminated the eight-point deficit. At one point in the third, Southern trailed 24-23, but couldn't quite get over the hump. The Thunderbirds took a 28-23 lead to the fourth.

Foul trouble though doomed Johnson County Central late as Southern got as many points from the free throw line — seven — as the Thunderbirds had points in the period.

In total, Southern outscored JCC 14-7 in the final eight minutes.

The game was tied late before Kendrea Troxel hit two free-throws with 1.1 second left to put the Raiders in front for good. After shooting 2-9 from the free throw line in the first three quarters, Southern converted 7-11 free throws in the final period to earn the victory.

Johnson County Central, who was in foul trouble a majority of the second half had just four free throw attempts the last two quarters, making just one.

Callie Cooper led Southern with 19 points.

Sterup led the Thunderbirds with 12 points.

The boys contest got off to a quick start, with the Thunderbirds leading 15-14 after the first quarter. They'd build that lead to its largest at 11 before Southern cut into it a bit before the half.

At the break, Johnson County Central led 32-25. The Raiders started the second half on a 11-2 run to tie the game at 34. From there it was a tight contest. Southern led 40-37 heading to the fourth quarter.

But then, the offenses stalled out. With two minutes left, each team had only managed two points in the quarter.

The Thunderbirds made the plays down the stretch, however, and pulled ahead 45-44 on a Cam Schuster layup. Then two-free throws would get the game to the final score at 47-44.

Evan Saathoff led Southern with 25 points, hitting six three-pointers in the process. Brandon Speckman led Johnson County Central with 19 points.

Johnson County Central (2-1 girls, 1-2 boys) are back at it Thursday at home versus Syracuse.

Southern (2-0 girls, 0-2 boys) are off until Friday when they'll host Tri County.
