Fortenberry introduces Winnebago Land Transfer Act

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A Native American tribe in Nebraska may be getting land back from the state.

Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry introduced the Winnebago Land Transfer Act on Thursday.

The bill would return a piece of land on the Iowa-Nebraska border along the Missouri River back to the Winnebago Tribe.

The land was appropriated by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1976 for development, but that project fell through.

Fortenberry says the bill returns Winnebago land to the Winnebago people.

He says additionally that hunters can continue to enjoy the spot through the Winnebago Tribe's Wildlife and Parks Program.
