VALENTINE, Neb. – A new scoreboard is on the way to the Valentine Baseball Complex.

During Thursday’s meeting, the Valentine City Council voted to contribute $10,000 toward the project, which is on city-owned property. The American Legion has already raised $12,500 and has ordered the board.

American Legion Post 90 Commander Monty Krueger said the replacement is necessary because the current scoreboard at Legion Field, purchased in 1995, flickers on and off. He said repairing it would cost within about $2,500 of buying a new one. Longtime Legion coach Kent Lopez added that the driver has been replaced twice, and the board caused problems during last year’s tournament.

Valentine Mayor Kyle Arganbright said he hopes the old scoreboard can be repurposed for the youth field.

“The youth would like to see a scoreboard, so we could try to use the old one there,” Arganbright said. “A shelter on the dugouts would also be nice because it’s really hot in July.”

Krueger expects the total cost of the project to be around $24,500.
