Wastewater spill from JBS food plant in Grand Island

A wastewater spill occurred Monday evening at JBS's Grand Island beef processing plant.

GRAND ISLANSD, Neb. — A wastewater spill occurred Monday evening at JBS’s Grand Island beef processing plant.

According to a notification of environmental concern from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, the plant released 7,800 gallons of wastewater to a storm drain due to equipment failure.

The company said it took immediate action to contain the spill and began cleanup efforts.

“JBS is working closely with state officials and appropriate regulatory agencies to ensure the incident is addressed safely, thoroughly and in compliance with environmental requirements,” a company spokesperson said.

Environmental professionals are on site implementing remediation measures, according to the company.

JBS said the safety of its employees and the surrounding community remains its top priority.

Another incident happened In 2024 after failure at a JBS wastewater facility millions of gallons of sewage were sent away from the plant and contaminated the Platte and Wood.
