Wisner, Neb. - Wisner Elementary announced the launch of Community for Kids, a program focused on enhancing early childhood education in the region.

With limited childcare options available in Northeast Nebraska, this initiative seeks to coordinate planning and resources, ensuring parents can work full shifts with the assurance that their children are well cared for.

The program, which started with 12 full-time students in January 2026, is now fully operational and aims to expand to accommodate a total of 70 children in the future.

This initiative was made possible after Wisner Public Schools applied for and received a grant from the Community for Kids organization. The grant was specifically intended for planning purposes, aimed at bolstering early childhood resources in the Wisner community by expanding preschool options. This led to the exploration of an after-school program to support working parents who previously relied on relatives or other outside childcare.

With remaining funds from the planning grant, the Wisner Child Care Initiative, a nonprofit organization, was established to host and direct the Growing Gators Afterschool Programs for kids.

Wisner Elementary Community for Kids and After School Program Director Shelby Harper shared positive feedback from the community, stating, "Parents are relieved they no longer have to rush from work or scramble to find last-minute daycare or a babysitter."

Harper also noted that the program fosters new friendships among students of different grades, providing opportunities for interaction that might not otherwise occur. The monthly program prices vary based on the school's operational days, with a daily drop-in rate set at $15.

For more information and to enroll a student, contact Wisner Elementary and inquire about the Community for Kids Program Director Shelby Harper.
