Battle Creek dam project denied at January board meeting

NORFOLK, Neb.— The plan for a dam near Battle Creek is off the table for now.
The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District board voted 9–6 on Thursday against approving a watershed agreement that would have added a dam near Battle Creek. The $56 million plan for a dam and levy was hoping to mitigate flooding in Battle Creek.
Board members cited the cost and location as some reasons for the decision.
The vote follows a recommendation for approval and an almost two-hour long discussion of the plan earlier this month. Some board members argued the dam would benefit Battle Creek and said rejecting the plan would be neglecting their duties.
There is no word yet on whether the project will be revisited or if other options will be explored to address flooding in Battle Creek.
