'Hope he wins that thing': Huskers react to Emmett Johnson Heisman push
LINCOLN, Neb. - It’s been nearly two weeks since Emmett Johnson struck the famous Heisman pose in Nebraska’s 28-21 win over UCLA, and since then, the Emmett Johnson four Heisman campaign has taken center stage.
It’s been a social media frenzy, which Johnson says has been both humbling and a blessing, but his ultimate goal continues to be winning.
“It’s amazing, it’s a blessing, they’ve done a great job pushing me out there,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot of people that play a part in that, a lot of teammates that have helped me get to that point.”
“I remember freshman year, back in the dorms, he’d keep saying ‘Just give me the chance man, I’m going to go crazy’, well he’s been going crazy.” Tight End Luke Lindenmeyer said.
It was announced Tuesday that Emmett Johnson is one of 10 semifinalists for the Oak Award, given to the nations best running back. Johnson ranks second in the nation with 1,431 yards from scrimmage, and is the only player in FBS with over 1,000 rushing yards and over 300 receiving yards. His
Johnson’s averaging over 21 carries per game, which would have been a concern for offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen during the preseason.
“We had that conversation with game one and game four being too much, but, is it? Because it doesn’t look like it is to me,” Holgorsen said. “Dude just keeps getting stronger and whatever we need to do to get the ball to him we’re going to do it and he can handle it.”
Johnson’s given a lot of credit for his success to offensive linemen like Rocco Spindler.
“We’re all proud of Emmett, he’s done an incredible job, hopefully he wins that thing,” Spindler said. “For us, it’s day in and day out, grab your lunch pales… He gets the credit, we get a few pancake blocks and we’re happy with it."
As the Big Ten’s leading rusher and the Big Red head down the final stretch of the year, Johnson’s goal is the same as it was before the year began.
“I just want to stay focused and humble and stay focused on helping the team win and not make it all about me,” Johnson said.
Nebraska and Penn State kick off at 6:00 p.m. CT on Saturday on NBC.
