KEARNEY, Neb. — After 25 seasons as the face of Kearney High football, head coach Brandon Cool is stepping away from the sidelines.

Cool announced Tuesday that he’s retiring from the position after leading the Bearcats to one of the most consistent runs in Class A football.

“After coaching a fantastic team like we did this fall, one that played hard and was easy to be around, it just felt like the perfect time for me and my family to make this transition,” said Cool.

During his tenure, Cool compiled a career record of 186 wins and 82 losses, guiding Kearney to 23 state playoff appearances in 25 seasons, including every year since 2010 — which is a streak tied for the third-longest in Class A history.

He also led the Bearcats to the 2006 Class A state championship, one of the program’s defining moments.

“This is one of the best jobs in the state,” said Cool. “I’ve truly enjoyed teaching and coaching these kids, and yeah, there were a lot of tears when I told the team and coaches.”

Cool said the decision came with a sense of peace, knowing the program is in a strong place. “I’m not getting out of it completely, just moving to the side a bit,” he said. “The cupboard’s not bare. It’s a great football job, and the ship doesn’t need me on it."

Kearney High Athletic Director Ryan Hogue said the search for Cool’s successor will begin immediately, though finding a replacement won’t be easy.

“I wish I could clone him," said Hogue. "What he’s built over 25 years stands for itself, his reputation precedes him and coaches across the state call him one of the best in Nebraska.”

Cool plans to remain at Kearney High as a teacher and stay involved with the track team this spring.

He leaves behind more than a winning record and a 2006 championship — he passes on a legacy of leadership, loyalty and Friday night memories that will last a lifetime.
