PENDER, Neb. — The Nebraska Secretary of State is mourning the loss of the Thurston County Clerk, who passed away late last week.

Patty Bessmer, 65, died on Sept. 26 at the Pender Community Hospital. Bessmer began her career as a cook at the Pender School before moving to work at the Thurston County Courthouse.

Bessmer was eventually elected as the county clerk and held that position until passing. As part of her duties as clerk, Bessmer also served as the county’s register of deeds and election commissioner.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen issued a statement on Bessmer’s death.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Patty Bessmer,” said Evnen. “Patty served the people of Thurston County with dedication, integrity and compassion. Her many years of public service reflect a deep commitment to her community.”

Evnen is choosing to honor Bessmer with “remembrance of her extraordinary service to the strengthening of our American Democracy.”

Bessmer’s visitation and funeral took place on Sept. 29 and 30. She is survived by her husband, three children and numerous grandchildren.

The Thurston County Board of Supervisors will be tasked with appointing Bessmer’s replacement.
