Rep. Adrian Smith talks tariffs, trade with China at southeast Nebraska ag event
DORCHESTER, Neb. - Nebraska 3rd District Congressman Adrian Smith was in the center of an event promoting international trade of agricultural products on Friday.
Smith discussed tariffs while speaking at the Motorcade for Trade event in Dorchester.
He believes the Trump administration's strategy can pay off. But he says making a deal with China is especially difficult because the nation will often go back on previously agreed upon terms. Smith says he wants to leverage the fact that China needs the U.S.
"I think with a good negotiation, we can end up with a better situation of leveling the playing field, getting China to buy our products," Smith said. "They're trying to retaliate right now. Their economy is in a situation where it's pretty delicate, so there's some pressure on them to come to the table as well."
Smith says Trump is acting in an executive capacity with negotiations right now. In order for anything to extend beyond his term, he will need Congress to act.
