LINCOLN, Neb.— A recreation area in Nebraska is under a health alert for toxic algae in the lake.

A health alert was issued on Friday for Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County about 4 miles south of Plymouth according to Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Harmful Algal Blooms, which are toxic blue-green algae, were found in the lake.

Samples taken earlier this week at Cub Creek measured above the normal threshold of total microcystin, the toxin released by certain blue-green algae strains.

The normal threshold is 8 parts per billion (ppb). Cub Creek was measured at 30.12 ppb.

“Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water,” NDHHS said in a news release.

Cub Creek Lake is a recreation area with fishing, swimming, picnics, and camping.

People can continue to use the area for other outdoor activities.

Last week's health alert for Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County was removed.

Since the first week of May weekly samples have been taken from 56 public lakes in Nebraska.
