Columbus Pummels Panthers With Power Run Game

COLUMBUS - The hometown Discoverers used big plays and a relentless ground assault to notch a 31-10 win over Norfolk Friday night as the 102-year Maroon Cup Highway 81 rivalry added another chapter.
Columbus jumped to a 10-0 first quarter lead when Carter Eisenmann took a pitch around left end and sped 74 yards to the house. Norfolk finally got on the board and cut it to a one-score game when a long drive resulted in a 26-yard Isidro Rosas field goal.
But the Discoverers stole that Thunder back right before halftime with a 23-yard tackle-breaking run by Evvann Daniels, putting Columbus up 17-3 at the break.
The Panthers fought gamely to the end, slicing the deficit to 7 again late in the 3rd when Cole Signor hit Rosas on a 9-yard scoring pass. But those big plays struck again for the hometown squad with Michael Voichoskie scoring twice, from 49 and 42 yards to salt the game away. Voichoskie led all rushers with 170 yards on the night.
Columbus (1-0) heads to Omaha Westside next week, while Norfolk (0-1) is back home against Bellevue East.
