Winside public schools unveils $22 Million transformation
WINSIDE, Neb. – After years of anticipation and a significant $22 million investment, Winside Public Schools has emerged with sweeping renovations designed to revolutionize its learning environment.
The extensive project includes a state-of-the-art central library, a cutting-edge shared space for shop and career and technical education programs, expanded preschool facilities, and a new life skills program.
The renovations address critical needs for space and modern learning environments. "This all stems from much-needed central office space and a connection piece between our high school and elementary buildings," explained Winside Public Schools 7th-12th grade principal David Schmit. "We have achieved that and renovated classrooms in the process to kind of make it a positive learning environment for the kids and be something that our community can be proud of and grow from."
The new central library boasts sleek bookshelves and collaborative tables, providing a modern hub for research and study.
On the Northside, the shared space for shop and career and technical education programs fosters innovation and hands-on learning. Students are actively involved, even building their own welding booth in the shop. The expanded space also benefits the school's AG and growing FFA programs, allowing students to work on a wider range of projects.
Recognizing the need to accommodate its growing preschool program, Winside Public Schools has also added more space for three and four-year-olds.
"The school in 2024 could only have 20 kids in each preschool class, and we had 36 kids sign up for preschool this year," said Pre-K - 6th principal April Kanust. "I didn't want to turn 16 kids away, but with the new renovations, we have room to accommodate all of them." Additionally, the school has implemented a life skills program for students with specialized needs, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive learning environment.
While the $22 million price tag is substantial, the school emphasizes the invaluable impact on the community and students' education.
"Renovations like this bring a sense of pride," said Schmit. "We're really grateful to everybody that supported this and looking forward to putting the best things in front of our kids and hopefully preparing them for a world outside of high school once they graduate." The transformation of Winside Public Schools marks a significant step forward in providing a modern, engaging, and supportive learning environment for its students.
