OGALLALA, Neb. – A multi-agency search is underway at Lake McConaughy after an unoccupied kayak was found Sunday evening near Admiral's Cove. Authorities believe a kayaker may be missing.

According to officials, the search began around 6:20 p.m. after a jet skier discovered a capsized kayak and brought it to shore. News Channel Nebraska has reached out to authorities, who have not yet released information on who was involved.

Crews from Keystone-Lemoyne Fire Department, Ogallala Fire Department, Lake McConaughy Dive Rescue, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Keith County Sheriff’s Office, Keith County EM, and multiple surrounding fire departments responded. Air support included a fixed-wing airplane making passes over the water and a helicopter conducting wide-circle sweeps. Boats equipped with sonar and search lights also searched the lake.

Four rescue boats remained on the water into the night as emergency vehicles lined the shore with lights flashing. Aircraft departed as darkness fell.

The search was suspended at 9:30 p.m. Sunday and was scheduled to resume Monday morning.

Authorities are asking the public to avoid the search area so rescue personnel can work safely.
