Inside Cody-Kilgore’s new pre-K through 5th grade school
CODY, Neb. - As the new school year begins, students in Cody are stepping into a brand-new building.
Fifth grader Ava Rahn proudly placed her belongings in her very first locker — a milestone for any student — but this year it came with an extra thrill: a new pre-K through fifth grade building for Cody-Kilgore Unified Schools.
The district hosted a ribbon cutting and open house Thursday to celebrate the opening of the facility, which is connected to the existing middle and high school.
“I think it will be an awesome school culture with having everything together in one town, and the older kids being able to interact with the younger kids,” said Cody-Kilgore School Board Vice President Landon Miller. “The younger kids look up to the older kids so much.”
For years, the district had been considering a new facility. Last year, voters approved a $3 million bond, with the community raising additional funds.
The old building had a number of issues, from cramped classrooms to crumbling ceilings and heating problems.
“The boiler was an issue. It was on its last leg, so we had a lot of issues last year,” said School Superintendent Ryan Orrock.
Bathrooms are another improvement. Miller said sewer problems at the old building sometimes forced school cancellations.
Crews also repurposed a former guidance room into a larger lunchroom. In the past, many students ate in the hallway, with tables set up in front of lockers and moved throughout the day.
Now, with updated classrooms, proper facilities, and more space to learn, district leaders hope the building will spark enthusiasm and success.
“My mom is an organizer, so now I’m an organizer,” Rahn said with a smile as she settled into her new locker.
