PILGER, Neb. — A teenager is in the hospital and three people could face charges after a fight involving a knife.

The Stanton County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a disturbance call at a home in Pilger on Thursday evening. According to a news release, a 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy suffered injuries from a large butcher knife that had been wielded by the girl. Medical personnel treated the boy at the scene and transported the girl to a Norfolk hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office says the girl will be charged with second-degree assault, a weapons violation, disturbing the peace and being an uncontrollable juvenile. The boy was cited for third-degree assault and disturbing the peace. Deputies also arrested 22-year-old Kaylee Allen of Pilger on suspicion of third-degree assault and disturbing the peace.

Sheriff Mike Unger says his office responded to a disturbance at the home earlier in the day involving the same people and that his deputies have have several contacts with the girl recently.

“This is a perfect example of our broken system, as we are not equipped and resources in dealing with juveniles that are often suffering from mental illness and lack of parental involvement or control,” Unger said in the release. “Law enforcement does the best we can with what we have to work with and we are fortunate that no one was more seriously injured or killed in this incident.”
