Investigators say two 9-year-old boys responsible for setting car on fire
KEARNEY, Neb.-- Two 9-year-old boys are accused of breaking into cars and setting one on fire.
Fire crews responded to a vehicle fire Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:50 p.m. in north Kearney.
The flame-engulfed vehicle was brought under control by firefighters and no one was injured in the incident.
After a joint investigation by the Kearney Police Department, Kearney Volunteer Fire Department and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office, the cause of the fire has been determined.
Video surveillance and witness statements indicated two male juveniles were observed running through the neighborhood, entering unlocked vehicles and stealing various items out of the vehicles.
Following the investigation, it was determined the vehicle fire was intentionally set by the 9-year-old boys. The boys were released to the custody of their parents.
KPD reminds residents to lock their vehicles, remove valuables and report suspicious activity immediately.
