KEARNEY, Neb. - The Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Reunion will hold its final gathering this week in Kearney after four decades of honoring service and sacrifice.

The 40th and final reunion taking place this week in Kearney, marking the end of an era for one of the state’s longest-running veteran traditions.

The four-day event kicks off Thursday and includes various activities such as a golf tournament, concerts, fellowship opportunities and a ladies’ luncheon focused on care-giving and support.

Organizers say the decision to conclude the annual event came down to age and logistics.

"We're inviting people from all over Nebraska, from the east to west, north to south. We're in our 70s and 80s, and we want to end on a high note. We want a great reunion, and we want to have everything that we've had in 40 years for this final one," said Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Reunion Organizer Denny Houska.

More than 500 veterans and family members are expected to attend, with organizers saying they made a special effort this year to reach veterans who have never attended a reunion before.

The event concludes with a special sunrise ceremony on Sunday morning, where Gold Star families are invited to honor their loved ones.

NCN will be displaying and reading the names of Nebraska soldiers who died in Vietnam on air throughout this week as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
