Gabe Kowalek named new Kearney Chief of Police

KEARNEY, Neb. - The City of Kearney has named Lt. Gabriel Kowalek as its new Chief of Police.
City Manager Brenda Jensen announced the promotion Monday, citing Kowalek’s extensive experience and strong community ties.
“After a thorough review, it was clear that Lt. Kowalek brings the right combination of experience, leadership, and vision to lead the department into the future,” said Jensen. “His commitment to public safety, deep understanding of our community, and decades of service make him an exceptional choice.”
Kowalek has spent 23 years with the Kearney Police Department, beginning as a patrol officer.
He has served in multiple roles including Narcotics Investigator, Road Patrol Sergeant, Special Services Sergeant, and most recently, Lieutenant overseeing both the Special Services Unit and Criminal Investigations Bureau.
A graduate of the FBI National Academy and Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, Kowalek holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and is pursuing a master’s degree in Public Safety from the University of Virginia.
“I am honored and humbled to serve as the next Chief of Police,” Kowalek said. “Kearney is a special place, and I’m committed to continuing our strong tradition of service, safety, and community engagement.”
Kowalek will succeed current Police Chief Bryan Waugh and is expected to assume the role in the coming weeks.
