Quarter-century of learning: Grazing conference marks 25 years in Kearney
KEARNEY, Neb. – Ranchers, students and agriculture specialists gathering in Kearney this week for the 25th annual Nebraska Grazing Conference, which is a one-day event focused on helping producers strengthen their land and boost their bottom line.
Hosted by Nebraska Extension and the Center for Grassland Studies, the conference began Tuesday with a field tour at the Rowe Sanctuary where participants explored grazing strategies that balance productivity with conservation.
This year’s keynote speaker was Dallas Mount, CEO of Ranching for Profit, who presented strategies to help producers improve their business management and make smarter financial decisions.
Organizers say the Nebraska Grazing Conference plays a critical role in connecting livestock producers with research-backed tools and peer insights that support long-term sustainability for both their land and their livelihoods.
“This is our 25th year, and it’s become a pretty well-known event,” said Nebraska Extension range and forage specialist Jerry Volesky. "These conferences act as a forum where people know each other, network and see what’s new. It’s a good place for producers to learn from one another in a peer-to-peer setting," said Volesky.
The conference also featured sponsors who showcased everything from fencing equipment to forage seed, and included break-out sessions where producers could learn directly from one another.
Educators from Nebraska Extension and the Center for Grassland Studies started the Nebraska Grazing Conference in 2001 after recognizing the need for a statewide forum focused on grazing and sustainable land management.
Since then the event has hosted over 400 speakers and draws hundreds of attendees annually, including participants from neighboring states.
High school and university students were invited to attend free of charge this year, which is a move organizers say is vital for developing the next generation.
The conference concluded with a banquet and a Q&A session, and will return to the Younes Conference Center next August for its 26th year.
