Carrie Jones trial, body camera footage reveals her reaction to husband's arrest
Madison, Neb. — The trial of Carrie Jones, linked to the August 4, 2022, murder of four Laurel residents, continued Thursday with body camera footage presented as key evidence.
Jones husband, Jason Jones, was previously convicted in September 2024 for the deaths of Gene and Janet Twiford, their daughter Dana, and neighbor Michelle Ebelling.
On the trial's third day, jurors viewed footage from Nebraska State Patrol investigator Tony Kavin's body camera. The video showed troopers informing Jones of her husband’s arrest warrant in connection to the quadruple homicide and arson. In the footage, Jones responded to the news by questioning, "Are you telling me my husband supposedly murdered four people?"
Kavin testified that Jones was not a suspect at the time, stating the initial priorities were to ensure her safety and gather information about the house layout.
However, investigators were perplexed by Jones' seemingly indifferent reaction to her husband’s severe burns and the nearby house fire. When asked why she didn’t take Jason to the hospital, Jones stated, "I got to go to work, what am I supposed to do? The bills don’t pay themselves, and my husband’s not very well off."
The 42-minute video also revealed Jones' account of seeing a figure stumble from across her yard, whom she later identified as her husband, outside Ebelling’s burning home.
She told investigators Jason was in and out of consciousness and suffering from severe burns, attributing his injuries to his military background and a desire to help others. Jones claimed her husband declined medical attention because "he’s an adult, he can make his own decisions." Trooper Kavin questioned why she wouldn’t take him to the hospital given his condition, to which Jones denied her husband had confessed to any wrongdoing.
