Bridge work continues on Hwy 136 west of Fairbury; drivers urged to slow down

FAIRBURY, Neb — Ongoing construction on Highway 136 west of Fairbury is entering a critical phase, with officials urging drivers to slow down and use caution through the work zone—especially after recent rain has created additional hazards.
Crews plan to address multiple washed-out areas on Thursday, weather permitting. Recent storms have caused erosion issues that need to be filled before work can continue. Adding to the challenge, officials say someone drove excessively fast through the construction zone, damaging part of the guardrail on the west end of the site.
Despite the setbacks, there's progress ahead. Crews are on schedule to pour the bridge deck in the coming days, and weather permitting, paving work will follow. The project is expected to move into Phase 2 by mid-September.
Officials thanked the public for their continued patience and reminded drivers that slowing down keeps both workers and drivers safe as the project moves toward completion.
