KEARNEY, Neb. - Kearney Public Schools are keeping their financial options open after the school board unanimously approved a measure aimed at strengthening the district’s long-term funding flexibility.

The board voted Monday to approve an increase in the district’s overall property tax request, up to five percent above the base growth rate, and unlocking about $3.6 million in potential taxing authority.

District officials emphasized this move does not raise the mill levy, meaning it won’t lead to higher local tax rates without a public vote.

It serves as a budgeting tool that gives the district flexibility to respond to financial uncertainties- particularly if federal grants or funding programs are eliminated.

Board members pointed out that a similar measure passed last year, but the district ultimately didn’t use around $1.8 million which was carried over into this year’s budget.

Officials say they plan to take the same approach this year, with full budget discussions for the upcoming school year taking place in separate meetings this summer.
