OGALLALA — A vehicle fire along Interstate 80 briefly shut down westbound traffic near Ogallala on Thursday morning, according to the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched around 10:20 a.m. to the head-to-head traffic crossover in the westbound lanes of I-80. When crews arrived, they found a passenger vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

The Ogallala Fire Department responded with multiple units. Keith County EMS staged nearby but did not need to assist. Brule Fire Department was requested to continue to the scene, while units from Keystone-Lemoyne Fire and Paxton were canceled en route.

Keith County Sheriff’s deputies had westbound traffic stopped while eastbound lanes continued to move. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and performed overhaul to eliminate remaining hot spots.

The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by an unknown electrical or mechanical failure. No injuries were reported.

Westbound traffic resumed shortly after the scene was cleared.
