An all-time great high school coach from Southeast Nebraska has earned his moment in the spotlight this summer.

Former Shickley and eventual BDS coach Dan Sorge was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in South Dakota at the end of June.

Already a member of the Nebraska sports hall of fame, Sorge began teaching and coaching at Shickley in 1979, where his volleyball teams would go on to win nearly 500 more games than they lost.

Famously, his Longhorn volleyball squad set state records by winning 104 matches in a row, and six consecutive state championships between 1987 and 1992 – his teams won seven state volleyball titles in total with the final one coming in 2005, as well as a boys basketball state championship in 1997. Shickley became the first school to win six consecutive volleyball championships, and the Longhorns smashed the previous consecutive wins record which was 74.

A native of Strang, Sorge's first coaching stop was in Ohiowa before he began his storied tenure at Shickley, which lasted from 1979 to 2015. In that time, his volleyball teams amassed a record of 677-196 with a total of 13 district titles on top of the seven state championships, while the boys basketball team went 281-85 overall with three district titles.

Sorge was twice named a state coach of the year and earned National Volleyball Coach of the Year recognition in 2000. A 2022 member of the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame, this year Sorge becomes the latest deserving coach from this state to join the ranks of the NHSACA hall.
