SIDNEY – The Sidney Platte Valley Companies Post 17 Juniors capped off on their regular season Tuesday night by sweeping a doubleheader from Kimball Legion 16U at Legion Field. Kimball, who played in the Alliance Prep League all season, was playing their first Junior Legion games of the season ahead of competing in the Class C, Area 7 Junior Tournament this weekend in Rushville. Sidney dominated game one in three innings 12-0 and won the nightcap in five innings 10-5.

In the opening contest, Sidney’s bats pounded out 12 hits as Calvin Borgmann kept Kimball in check on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four and not walking a batter. Anderson Smelley went three for three at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Rhyder Bayne and Sam Hulbert each went two for two at the plate with an RBI. Sidney scored 10 runs on 12 hits.

Game two of the doubleheader, Rylan Swope set Kimball down in order in the top of the first inning. Sidney got off to a good start in the home half of the opening inning by scoring four runs on two hits.

Kimball cut into the Sidney lead in the top of second, scoring three runs on two hits. Sidney responded with five runs on just one hit in the bottom of the inning as Kimball pitching surrendered five walks and hit one batter. Sidney finished with 10 runs on four hits while Kimbal tallied five runs on six hits.

Sidney will host the Class B Area 7 Tournament this weekend at Legion Field. The seven-team tournament begins on Friday featuring Alliance Post 7, Chadron Post 12, Gering Post 36, Hi-Line (Elwood) Post 290, Imperial Post 304, Ogallala Post 135, and Sidney Post 17. The winner advances to the state tournament July 19-July 23 in Gering.

Sidney enters the tournament as the number two seed and will open their tournament against the number seven Hi-line at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The tournament begins at 1:00 p.m. with number five seed Gering facing number four seed Imperial. At 4:00 p.m., number three seed Chadron will meet number six seed Ogallala.

Admission is $8.00 for adults, students are $5.00, and veterans get in free.
