SIDNEY — Severe thunderstorms tracked across parts of western Nebraska on Monday afternoon, pelting areas of Cheyenne and Garden counties with large hail and strong winds.

At 4:21 p.m., golf ball-size hail was reported three miles northwest of Brownson in Cheyenne County, according to an official spotter report to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne. An inch of rain was also reported at Brownson. A trained weather spotter also confirmed quarter-size hail around 4:55 p.m. eight miles north of Lodgepole.

Further north, a storm in Garden County produced ping pong ball-size hail at 5:27 p.m. about 12 miles southwest of Oshkosh, according to the North Platte weather office.

Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Monday for Cheyenne, Deuel, Garden and Keith, citing hazards including half dollar-size hail and wind gusts of 60 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service warned of potential damage to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees, and advised residents to take shelter indoors during the storms.

No injuries or major structural damage had been reported as of Monday evening.
