Strong winds, large hail, landspout tornado reported during Sunday storms across the southern Panhandle
SIDNEY — Severe storms swept through the southern Nebraska Panhandle and northeastern Colorado on Sunday, producing damaging winds, large hail and multiple reports of landspouts.
The National Weather Service issued numerous severe thunderstorm warnings beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening, affecting Cheyenne, Kimball, Morrill, Banner and Box Butte counties in Nebraska, along with Logan and Morgan counties in Colorado and Laramie County in Wyoming.
In eastern Colorado, a trained spotter reported a landspout tornado four miles west of Midway in Morgan County at 3:48 p.m. The landspout lasted approximately five minutes and was confirmed by multiple spotters and storm chasers who captured video of the tornado. Just minutes earlier, hail up to quarter size was reported five miles north of Dailey in Logan County.
Across the border in Wyoming, strong thunderstorm winds lashed Laramie County, where a mesonet station near Burns measured a 58 mph gust at 3:58 p.m. Another report east-southeast of Burns estimated 70 mph winds, with video showing significant blowing dust and reduced visibility.
The Nebraska Panhandle saw a wave of storm activity that included a confirmed landspout near the Cheyenne-Morrill County lines - 11 miles north-northeast of Potter - around 6:12 p.m. The rotating ground-level circulation was verified through video posted to social media.
Morrill County bore the brunt of the hail, with golf ball-size hail reported near Broadwater just after 6:30 p.m., and quarter-size hail accompanied by wind damage southeast of the community. A trained spotter documented a six-inch diameter tree knocked down by the storm. Hail continued across the region, including half dollar-size hail north of Bayard and additional quarter-size hail near Lisco and southwest of Alliance.
Severe thunderstorm watches remained in effect through 8 p.m. as storms moved east across the region. No injuries were reported.
