Updated: Train derails escaping with no injuries
NORFOLK, Neb. — A cleanup operation is underway near Norfolk Iron and Metal on Saturday because of a train derailment.
Video from the scene shows at least six train cars off of the rails at the Victory Road railroad crossing immediately east of Norfolk Iron and Metal. The derailment occurred directly at the crossing, meaning all traffic is blocked on that section of Victory Road. Several workers were on scene assessing the situation.
Details concerning the derailment are unclear as of Saturday afternoon. Norfolk Iron and Metal’s office is closed. A Norfolk Police official said the division doesn’t have any information on the incident despite being aware that it had happened. Information about injuries or how long the crossing will be closed are unavailable at this time.
Officials from the Nebraska Central Railroad Company shared that there were no injuries involved with the accident, but are still unsure when the site will be cleared. NCRC is waiting for essential equipment and crews from Grand Island to arrive before removing the site.
Information provided by Norfolk Iron and Metal says that the derailment is only associated because access is available only through their property, as the accident occurred on NCRC tracks.
