KIMBALL -- Kimball’s downtown crosswalks got a fresh paint job last weekend ahead of the Lincoln Highway Conference tour earlier this week.

The crosswalks were first painted two years ago at the start of the Creative Crosswalks project organized by Activate Kimball.

The group wanted to give a fresh look to the Lincoln Highway design, which is red, white and blue with an “L” in the center.

This design pays tribute to the town’s history of being part of the old Lincoln Highway.

“It marks part of the old route of the Lincoln Highway, which is what Highway 30 used to be called,” said Jamie Bright, Co-organizer of the project. “It turned at the stop light and went down to First Street, then turned west down that road that connects to Highway 30.”

The Lincoln Highway stretched over 3,000 miles from New York to San Francisco and was the first transcontinental road for automobiles in the United States, according to the Lincoln Highway Association’s website.

The Lincoln Highway Association hosted a conference this week in Ogallala that included a tour from Ogallala to Cheyenne. The tourists made a stop in Kimball to see the crosswalks that highlight the historic Lincoln Highway.
