SIDNEY -- Among the opportunities to celebrate the Fourth of July are vendors who support community causes.

Job's Daughters have set up shop near Runza offering a variety of Independence Day fireworks. Proceeds from sales supports Job's Daughters activities, including a program for children needing hearing aids.

Ila Mitchell and Harper were watching the site Friday afternoon.

"We have your big fireworks, and down to your little fireworks, novelty fireworks. We just got a little bit of everything for everybody," Mitchell said.

She said Job's Daughters has been selling fireworks for several years. Proceeds from fireworks sales supports Job's Daughters activities including a program for children needing hearing aids.

Balfour fireworks on 11th Avenue have been offering fireworks for more than 50 years. It started as a way to help the Optimist Club. The fireworks stand started with Bob Balfour, and has continued with his sons.

"It all started 56 years ago as a fundraiser for the Optimist Club. Dad had gotten a bunch of guys together and they started the Optimist Club. Dad was the president. They came up with the idea of selling fireworks for their fundraiser," said Bob Balfour Jr.

When Balfours first started selling fireworks, the city limits separated the yard from what is now the fireworks tent. They had to sell north of the home, at the bowling alley.

The Balfour family has been supporting the Folds of Honor program since their mother heard about it.

"Mom and dad met, Col. Dan Rooney. At the time he was a Major, but he's now a Colonel. He's a fighter pilot for the Oklahoma National Guard. He's the founder of Folds of Honor. Mom heard the story and really fell in behind supporting Folds of Honor.

Folds of Honor is a fund raiser for families of first responders and service members who have died or disabled in the line of duty.

Sidney High School athletes are also offering a wide variety of fireworks.
