KEARNEY, Neb. - A former Kearney High School athlete is transferring to one of the nation's most widely recognized athletic programs.

Left-handed pitcher Cal Higgins announced on social media Friday that he's taking his talents to the University of Texas at Austin to continue his collegiate athletic career.

Higgins started his post-high school career at junior college powerhouse Iowa Western before transferring to division-one Western Kentucky.

The Longhorns won the SEC regular season championship in their first year in the conference, and were upset in regionals by UTSA to end their 2025 season.
