UPDATE: The bridge was clear by 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and both the north and southbound lanes are open to traffic.

NORFOLK, Neb. — As of late Tuesday afternoon, northbound traffic is shut down on the bridge that serves as the main north/south entrance to Norfolk.

Authorities responded to the Highway 81 bridge over the Elkhorn River around 2:15 Tuesday afternoon for a traffic concern. A trailer hauling farm machinery got stuck in the guardrail on the east edge of the bridge.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation responded to the scene to assist in removing the guardrail and working to get the trailer back onto the road. Norfolk Police and the Nebraska State Patrol shut down the northbound lanes of the highway and rerouted traffic. Authorities issued two Wireless Emergency Alerts to warn people to avoid the area.

It’s unclear how long the northbound lanes will be shut down.
