Omaha mayor, Nebraska governor offer starkly different takes on ICE raid
OMAHA — Omaha’s mayor is voicing his disapproval of Tuesday’s immigration raid that led to dozens of people being detained.
In a news conference Wednesday afternoon, newly-elected mayor John Ewing said he didn’t like that the raid happened in his city but that he has no influence to affect it. Specifically, Ewing said he didn’t like that the confusion and fear following the raid led to closures at some businesses, a community college and a library. He said it creates uncertainty and a less-welcoming environment in the city.
Ewing, a Democrat, urged Congress to create a comprehensive immigration plan.
“They are contributing to our states and they are contributing to our nation," Ewing said. "So let’s do this in a way that makes sense. That’s not soft on crime or anything, it’s humanitarian.”

Gov. Jim Pillen, a Republican, issued a statement regarding the raid on Wednesday afternoon.
“Under the Biden Administration, the country’s immigration policy absolutely failed the American people for four years. We have to address the issue of illegal immigration, and I support the work of our federal partners to ensure that the law is followed and I remain supportive of President Trump’s efforts to secure the border.”
