OMAHA, Neb. — Many in Omaha are in shock on Tuesday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided a local business.

Omaha Mayor John Ewing confirmed the raid and that agents had detained people. Rep. Don Bacon's District Director and Director of Outreach talked to ICE officials and said the raid was isolated to Glenn Valley Foods. The Congressman's statement said the warrant was in relation to stolen identities and that ICE had verified that the company had 100% complied with E-Verify, a government employee eligibility system.

“We understand people’s concerns for their loved one’s safety and have full confidence and expectations that ICE will operate within their legal authority and treat people with respect," Bacon said.

The first reports came in shortly after 10:00 from workers inside Glenn Valley Foods. Videos from inside the plant circulated quickly on social media, leading to a large group gathering outside the facility. CEO Gary Rohwer told an NCN reporter the agents arrived unannounced.

“Ma’am, it was a raid, so there’s nothing we could do," Rohwer said. "It’s the federal government. They have a right to come in our property.”

Video from the scene shows dozens of people with wrists tied being loaded onto a bus. It’s unclear how many people are detained, but Rohwer said the agents had a list of 97 employees they wanted to screen.

Rohwer is confident the raid isn’t going to hurt his company.

“No because we’re going to be better because of it,” Rohwer said. "We're not going to allow this to ever happen again."

He went on to say there’s a new Homeland Security program that helps verify people’s legal status.

It was initially unclear if other businesses experienced raids. Multiple government officials and agencies issued statements saying other there were multiple raids. In response, a group of protesters set up outside of JBS Foods.

Omaha Police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office each issued statements saying their only involvement was traffic control.

Bacon's office says that people who may have family members who have been detained can call ICE at 402-536-4861. This number is for family members only.
