OMAHA, Neb.- Omaha Police have confirmed there are active ICE raids happening Tuesday.

The Omaha Police Department posted to social media around 11:50 a.m. stating, “The Omaha Police Department is aware of ICE operations currently taking place in Omaha. The Department of Homeland Security recently notified OPD of the operations and OPD officers responded to the areas for traffic control. Federal authorities are responsible for immigration enforcement. OPD's role is only assisting with traffic control and public safety in the areas near the operations.”

A reporter with Telemundo and NCN saw a vehicle labeled “ICE” near Glenn Valley Foods around 10:15 a.m. in South Omaha.

Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia posted a Facebook live on the scene at JBS Foods. Though it has been confirmed by WOWT that JBS had closed and evacuated it's employees due to an unrelated issue. 

WOWT reports Garcia left the board's regular Tuesday meeting to be at the scene.

Around 12:06 p.m Flavio, a Glenn Valley Foods worker, told the Flatwater Free Press in Spanish he believes about 50 workers are still inside the plant. Flavio, a US resident, was allowed to leave. He guesses 40 law enforcement agents entered the plant, including some with “DHS” on their uniforms.

Chad Hartmann, the President of Glenn Valley Foods, told the Flatwater Free Press that he was completely unaware of the raids and thought the plant's E-Verify process was good.” 

Karla Cabrera, whose aunt is a Glenn Valley worker, told the Flatwater Free Press that her aunt told her by phone that law enforcement rushed in wearing masks. Officers asked those believed to be undocumented to sign a document, but it wasn’t translated into Spanish, leading to anger and confusion.

Gary Rohwer, the owner and CEO of Glenn Valley Foods, said officers came into the plant with a list of around 97 people needing to be screened. 

The Flat Water Free Press reports Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said the Department of Homeland Security contacted his office about a week ago to help control traffic around an immigration investigation in Omaha. Hanson said he doesn’t know details of the federal plan.

Mayor John Ewing said in a news release that the Omaha Police Department is and will not be involved in obtaining legal status from any individuals.
