HASTINGS, Neb. – A new online system is providing Hastings Utilities customers with several new features to keep better track of their utility usage each month.

The new changes took effect this week and include a new customer service module.

According to the city, The now former 'Customer Connect' module was dated and had limited functionality.

Features of the new module include enhanced communication options via email and text notifications.

Customers can also schedule payments, see up-to-date meter data, set self-service alerts, and continue to pay their monthly bill online.

A news release says the ongoing implementation of smart meters will provide instantaneous two-way communication between a meter and Hastings Utilities’ customer service department, which can identify high usage and potentially detect leaks.

With these new communication options, Hastings Utilities is also phasing out the practice of leaving paper notices on customers' doors with delinquent accounts.

Before that change, the Utilities Department paid about $109,000 annually to deliver postings to doors the day before service was scheduled to be shut off, but that cost was offset by a $25 posting fee.

Customers are encouraged to communicate with the utilities customer service office, by calling 402-463-1371, or emailing [email protected] with any questions about the new changes.
