Ogallala Fire Department outlines Keith County burning regulations
OGALLALA, Neb. – The Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department is reminding residents of Keith County about the rules for open burning as summer approaches, including what types of fires are allowed and which require permits.
Currently, campfires, defined as fires in shallow pits or on the ground no larger than three feet in diameter with flames under three feet high, are allowed in Keith County. This includes fires in commercial fire pits or rings.
However, bonfires, with flames taller than three feet or stacks of materials exceeding three feet wide, are not allowed without a burn permit from the local fire chief. Permits may be issued for celebratory bonfires if conditions are favorable.
Open burns, such as large piles of tree limbs, brush or organic materials, also require a permit. Before approval, the local fire chief must conduct a site visit to inspect conditions and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Prescribed burns used for land management fall under a separate statute and require a formal burn plan, which must be submitted and approved in advance.
In addition, all fireworks are banned in Keith County, including within the city limits of Ogallala and around Lake McConaughy, as per local resolution.
